Cheers to Water!

Our body is made up of 70% of water. We have been told that the suggested amount of water each day for an adult would be 7 – 8 glasses a day. Yet, not many people are hydrating themselves well. Some even avoid drinking water as they believe that it would cause water retention.

So why is it important to drink water? Here are 8 benefits that our body will get when we have sufficient amount of water in our body.

1) Aids our digestions

The first part of our digestion process starts from our mouth. We put food into our mouth and chew, the saliva would be excreted to break the food’s nutrients so that the body can absorb these nutrients.

2) Regulate the temperature in our body

Our body has to remain at a temperature around 36C. When heat rises up due to exercising, weather or the temperature of our surrounding, we will perspire to release the excess heat, so that we can remain at our body temperature.

3) Excrete waste from our body

This is done through perspiration, urination and defecation. When our body is not well hydrated, we may suffer from constipation. The kidneys need water to filter waste through urination. Insufficient water may cause kidney stones.

4) Aids in the movement of joints and protects tissue and spinal cords

Having sufficient water helps us to lubricate and cushion our joints, tissues and spinal cords.

5) Aids in weight loss

Drinking water helps in our weight management. Many times, we may mistaken thirst in between meals as hunger. Hence, we start to snack. Try drinking water next tim. You will find yourself filled up and not reach out for the chocolate bar. Good news is that when you drink water, it will give a boost to the metabolic rate.

6) Improve blood oxygen circulations

Water plays a very important part in delivering oxygen and nutrients to our body. It also improves our blood circulation and hence water is vital to our overall health.

7) Keeps us alert

When we have sufficient water in our body, our mind will stay alert and able to focus.

8) Retains skin suppleness

There are so much emphasis for ladies who want to look young to keep their face hydrated. We can see so many skincare products that contains hyaluronic acid and collagen. One of the cheapest way of keeping the face hydrated is to drink sufficient water.

Many people do not see the need to drink so much as they are not feeling thirsty. However, if we wait till we feel thirsty before we take our next sip of water, it may be too late as our body would be at the stage of dehydration. Hence, it is important to drink water throughout the day even if you are not feeling thirsty.

In order for us to get enough water throughout the day, we can download a water tracking app from our phone app. I personally like to carry a bottle of water around, even when I am at home as a form of reminder to drink water. Some people do not like to drink plain water, so they can make their water more interesting by adding a couple slices of lemon or lime. We can also hydrate ourselves by consuming fruits like watermelon or vegetables like cucumbers and zucchinis.
